Project Description
The American Psychological Association (APA) is the largest scientific and professional organization representing psychology in the United States, with nearly 130,000 researchers, educators, clinicians, consultants, and students as its members. Their mission is to advance the creation, communication, and application of psychological knowledge to benefit society and improve people’s lives. In April 2014, the APA made an effort to reduce energy consumption, maximize recycling, and become more environmentally conscious. As part of this initiative, they added a green roof to their Washington, DC headquarters.
The new rooftop used Bison Ipê Wood Tiles for a warm, natural look that contrasts the cool stone pavers. Bison Powder-Coated Aluminum Cubes were utilized not only as planters for perennials, but also as additional seating by adding a Bison Ipê Cube Top. Finishing off the rooftop deck are steel trellises that provide ample shade for the employees and plants, creating usable event space with spectacular views of The Capitol Building. The APA Headquarters has the honor of being in the top 10% of buildings with the lowest carbon footprint in the United States.
